Carlmont High School

Attending class regularly and being on time have a direct effect on a student’s success in meeting course requirements for high school graduation. Frequent absences or tardies, which result in a student missing all or parts of lectures, demonstrations, discussions or other classroom activities, are detrimental to the individual student and the class. Persistent student non-attendance and tardiness are therefore matters of serious concern.

Attendance Line Available 24/7 to Clear Absences

Attendance (650) 595-0210 x30000 / x30001 (Spanish)

Attendance Office hours: 7:30 a.m. – 3:45 p.m.

Voicemail is cleared several times a day, but do not use to request a pass to either leave or return.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

  • 18 unexcused absences with 3 or more cuts = an “NA” grade (NO CREDIT).
  • 18 excused absences & NO MORE than 3 cuts- a student can still receive credit.
  • Do not call to excuse tardies.  Tardies are not excusable.

TO CLEAR AN ABSENCE:

  • Student absences must be cleared by a parent/guardian within 5 school days by a phone call or a hand-written note explaining the absence.  After the 5th day the absence becomes unexcused if it is not cleared.  If the student is absent 5 (five) consecutive school days, a medical note must be provided to excuse absences after the fifth day.  *NO EXCUSE NOTES MAY BE SENT BY EMAIL.  ALL NOTES MUST HAVE A HAND-WRITTEN PARENT OR GUARDIAN SIGNATURE AND THE NOTE MUST BE DATED.  NO EXCEPTIONS.
  • Parents/guardians of 18-year-old students are expected to follow the attendance procedures regarding notes and telephone calls as any other student.
  • Attendance records are also available on the Infinite Campus website.  Mistakes do happen, and a teacher may mark a student absent who was in class.  If an error has been made, the student may pick up a correction slip in the Attendance Office.
  • Truancy issues?  Contact your student’s counselor or Administrative Vice Principal.

AUTOMATIC CALLER

The Sequoia Union High School District does provide an automatic caller to notify parents/guardians of their student’s attendance for each day.  Even though a parent calls the Attendance Office to clear a child’s absences or if students are excused for a school activity, an automated phone call will usually still be placed to the home.  Parents/guardians may track their student’s attendance via the parent portal on Infinite Campus.

CARLMONT HIGH SCHOOL IS A CLOSED CAMPUS

  • Carlmont High School has a closed campus.  This means that students are not allowed to leave the campus once they arrived for their school day until following their last class of the day.  Students may not leave campus during lunch for any reason.
  • Students who must leave campus during the day should go to the Attendance Office to secure a pass to leave.  Students may be brought back on campus by Belmont Police Department, searched and may be cited for “truancy” if they are off campus during school hours.

STUDENTS MUST NOT EXIT THE CAMPUS WITHOUT A “PERMIT TO LEAVE”.

To leave for an appointment:  Bring a note to the Attendance Office BEFORE SCHOOL or AT LUNCH and a permit to leave will be issued.  The student may leave at the time written on the permit.  Last minute appointments are strongly discouraged…Please plan ahead and communicate with the attendance office.

If you are ILL and want to go home:  Proceed immediately to the Health Aide office. The health aide will call home to obtain parent/guardian permission to leave campus and issue you a Permit to Leave slip.

Students:

  • DO NOT CALL PARENT/GUARDIAN from CELL PHONE or from CLASSROOM. REPORT DIRECTLY to the HEALTH OFFICE IN ORDER TO OBTAIN A PASS TO LEAVE.
  • Do not leave the school campus without proper permission!  Doing so may result in an unexcused absence for the class time missed.
  • Phone calls from parents/guardians will not clear the absence unless the student picks-up the permit to leave slip from attendance prior to leaving the campus.
