Counseling Information for 8th Graders

Valuable tools and information for incoming 8th Grade students and families
Information Sessions:
This virtual information session is optional and is designed to meet the needs of parents and students wanting more information for their decision and/or transition to high school. This webinar is held every February, hosted by the 8th Grade Transition team, featuring Carlmont Administration and Staff, as well as some Carlmont students. You'll hear general information about curriculum and student life and have the chance to ask questions via Q&A.
This event was held on February 8, 2024.
To help you through the enrollment and registration process, the Carlmont Counseling Department hosts a Parent Information Night every March for 8th-grade parents. This session is catered toward all incoming parents at Carlmont and will highlight timelines, academic requirements for graduation, academic pathways, course placement process, and student life for freshmen.

Online Information Update
Starting May 1st all families will participate in the Online Information Update (OIU) through Infinite Campus. Families will confirm that their contact information is correct as well as view and acknowledge several district-wide policies.  The same login information for the OIU will be used for CANVAS and Infinite Campus.
At the end of the process, you will see your student's course selections.  At this time, you will have the opportunity to submit online questions to the counseling department. Please note that our counselors are currently registering our 9th - 11th-grade students and will not be able to respond to 8th-grade registration questions about course selections until May 1st.  Counselors have between May 1st and May 24th to respond to questions through the OIU.
Incoming 9th graders are placed into both Math and English Language Arts (ELA) courses based on various test scores. Please use the charts below to see how your student was placed in the class recommended for them.
COMPASS Program for Incoming 8th Graders
The goal of the Summer Programs is to provide some academic acclimation to the coursework incoming freshman will deal with, as well as the necessary mental/social preparation they will need to juggle the coursework, new social dynamics, and overall mindsets to reach their full potential. Students who attend COMPASS not only understand the type of work load that is expected during freshman year, but will also know the campus very well, have connections to freshman teachers (they teach freshman during the regular school year), and either strengthen or make new friendships to start the school year.
